Conservation Areas

In Spen Valley there are five conservation areas - locations where there is a special historic or architectural character. The council has designated these areas in order to apply stricter planning policies to protect their character from unsympathetic changes. In conservation areas, all trees are deemed to be protected from felling or mutilation. If you see trees being felled or severely pruned in one of the areas below, please contact Kirklees Council.

Designation adds a slightly tougher control through the planning system. But not much more. For example designation has not prevented most houses from having Upvc window frames fitted.

Spen Valley's conservation areas are:

Scholes village centre (part)

Hartshead Moor Top

Greater Gomersal,  from Red House to Knowles Lane

Little Gomersal

East Bierley (part)
