Leslie Heward Plaque 12

Spen Valley's talented composer and conductor Leslie Heward was born in Millbridge at 15 Station Lane (now 15 Halifax Road). He started as a choirboy at Lower Wyke Moravian Church before  attending Manchester Cathedral Choir Schoool and the Royal College of Music. He was assistant music master at Eton College before becoming the musical director of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the South African Broadcasting Corporation, and conductor of the British National Opera Company. Leslie Heward was one of the brightest stars of the English classical music firmament, but died of ill-health aged just 45.
