Conservation areas
In Spen Valley there are five conservation areas. These are locations where there is a special historic or architectural character to a particular area. The council has designated these areas in order to apply stricter planning policies in the hope of protecting their character from unsympathetic changes. Also, in conservation areas, all trees are deemed to be protected from felling or mutilation.
Designation adds a slightly tougher control through the planning system. But not much more. Designation has for example not prevented most houses from having Upvc window frames fitted.
The conservation areas are:
Scholes village centre (part)
Hartshead Moor Top
Greater Gomersal, from Red House to Knowles Lane
Little Gomersal
East Bierley (part)
We will one day add maps to this page.
